The much-anticipated 2007 Ford Shelby GT500 will start at $42,975, including a $745 destination charge and a $1,300 gas-guzzler tax. The Shelby GT500 convertible will start at $47,800, including shipping and the gas-guzzler tax, Ford told Inside Line on Friday.
Ford\342\200\231s Special Vehicle Team, rumored to be on the ropes as recently as 90 days ago (\342\200\234Is SVT RIP?\342\200\235 March 27), is showing some signs of life. During a recent Ford product preview SVT chief Hau Thai-Tang assured us the Ford performance arm is alive and well, employs 60 engineers dedicated to developing SVT products, and is planning for the future.
Ford spokespeople let it slip that the company is considering SVT variants of its new Edge crossover and Fusion sedan. The move would support Mark Field's statements last month that SVT is alive and well, and not on its deathbed as previously rumored.

The truck won't likely be the Explorer Sport Trac Adrenaline, which was sacrificed to The Way Forward gods.
The brand, marketing, team, and eventually the vehicles will disappear. With the premium performance brands going strong at some other companies, this is surely not a good sign for Ford. The 2007 Shelby Cobra will be the last of the SVTs.

Ford is permitting all of its vehicles to sell SVT vehicles, including the GT500. Previously only several hundred of its 3,800 dealerships were certified for SVT sales. This could increase SVT sales, but Ford is hoping that it will increase dealer traffic as well.
