We're going to make an assumption that it will outperform all flavors of the R8, ensuring that the new Audi supercar does not step on the raging bull's hooves.
The R8 is derived from the Le Mans Quattro concept car seen at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2003; it takes the name of Audi's Le Mans car to emphasis its performance potential. Rumours are that this is the Lamborghini Gallardo V8, spotted on the Nürburgring. The exhaust note is somewhat similar to that of the Audi R8 and recent spy photos of the rear reveal smaller exhaust pipes than on the V10 Gallardo.

The car formally known as the Le Mans Quattro was recently caught on public roads around the N\374rburgring in Germany. The concept featured a V10 "biturbo" engine with FSI to produce 610 bhp at 6,800 rpm. We'd guess the production version of this supercar, which looks close to production readiness in these photos, will debut at the Paris Show this fall.

Audi has halted R8 development of the higher-powered twin-turbo Lambo V10 from the RS6; there have been fires in prototype development and other options – namely a naturally aspirated V10 – are now most likely. This year’s V12 diesel concept car (image, far right) points to the likelihood of a spider sports car, powered by the 6.0-litre bent twelve delivering a traction-troubling 493bhp and 738lb ft. Sounds mad, but Audi is deadly serious about putting this into production.
At the January 2008 NAIAS in Detroit, Audi showed an R8 sports car with a V12 TDi diesel engine. Derived from the race engine in the Le Mans-winning R10, the 500-hp (373-kW) 1000-Nm (739 ft.lb) production unit will see its first application in the production Q7 SUV.
